Access Compliance is among the list of in-house services Lionakis provides, and Michelle Davis has been serving as Lionakis’ Director of Accessibility for six years.  She is an Architect and Certified Access Specialist in the State of California. Creating built environments that everyone can use is her passion, and she’s been fortunate enough to be able to do just that almost exclusively for the past 14 years.

She has found that the best way to understand why the access codes are the way they are is to try to understand the needs and challenges of people living with disabilities. Many have been so generous in sharing with her what works and what doesn’t, and she passes that knowledge along to anyone who is interested in learning.  Many of our clients at Lionakis appreciate this understanding, because they operate large or complex facilities, with a variety of user groups, and they can plan better for the future.

Planning for the future is one of the key components of access compliance.  Our state and federal laws require upgrades in many cases, either to simply remove barriers or as part of a larger project that is undertaken.  Identifying what needs to be upgraded is the first task, and where Lionakis comes in. We’ve assessed tens of millions of square feet, in all types of buildings, from small historic storefronts to entire campuses of new construction.

In this blog series, you can read about various topics on accessibility in design. Let Lionakis assist you in your future planning/assessment needs!
