Confidential State Office Building
Confidential
The expansion of this critical Sacramento-area State-owned office building was designed around the agency's mission to secure the future of its members by recruiting and retaining highly skilled staff. The 10-story addition, shared between five floors of office space and a five-level parking structure, brought with it a full suite of amenities: a child care facility, a cafeteria, fitness center, and dramatic lobby atrium entrance. All ground-floor programming was designed for public access, extending the building's benefit into the surrounding West Sacramento neighborhood.
Bringing the vision to life required post-tensioned beams threaded with electrical conduit and heavy rebar, shear wall reinforcement throughout the parking levels, and a 5-inch slab coordination challenge across utilities and structural support. These elements kept the team problem-solving at every phase. Most visibly, the main lobby entry required more than 30-foot form scaffolding to protect architectural concrete below while simultaneously supporting the fourth-floor structure above. The finished result, the atrium, is one of the project's most dramatic spaces. Lionakis served as Associate Architect, working alongside ZGF Architects to complete this project.
