Every Project Makes a Difference

Our team brings experience and genuine partnership to every project to deliver design solutions that are innovative, sustainable, and responsive to your unique needs.

We believe the journey matters as much as the destination—because ultimately, this work isn’t about us, it’s about creating a better future for you, your stakeholders, and the communities we all share.

Stronger Together

At Lionakis, we foster an equitable and inclusive culture where all voices are heard, respected, and valued. By celebrating diverse perspectives and lived experiences, both within our firm and in the communities we serve, we harness our collective strengths. We are better together.

A History of Design

Founded in 1909 by California’s first State Architect, George Sellon, we’ve built a legacy of trusted partnerships and meaningful work in the education, healthcare, civic, and commercial sectors. While we’ve grown and evolved over the years, our guiding principles have remained the same, with a dedication to relationships, performance, and design.

Today, we’re proud to be building upon this legacy—one that puts people first and honors the responsibility we hold to those who follow.

1909

The Great 1906 San Francisco earthquake compelled California political officials to establish our first State Architect, naming George C. Sellon to the position. In 1909, Sellon began his private practice in Sacramento, where he notably designed the first high-rise building at 926 J Street.

1950s

James R. Liske and Whitson W. Cox joined the firm, creating the partnership of Cox & Liske Associates and building a reputation for quality within the architecture and engineering industry.

1960s

Employees Klyne G. Beaumont, Howard Engberg, and George Lionakis were added as partners, creating Liske, Lionakis, Beaumont & Engberg. The firm continued to thrive, developing long-standing relationships with clients, including AT&T and the State of California.

1980s

The firm continues to add clients and expand reach throughout California, officially incorporating as Lionakis Beaumont Design Group.

2000s to Present

Lionakis expands again, acquiring new offices and adding to established locations with branches in Sacramento, Oakland, Irvine, San Jose, and San Diego. Our roster grows to more than 200 team members. We remain committed to our founding vision, providing architecture, structural engineering, and interior design to environments that transform communities.

The Lionakis Foundation

The Lionakis Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of education, health awareness, and urban environments. A charitable organization, the Foundation exists to promote a better future for our shared communities through philanthropic giving and volunteerism.

Together, we all commit our resources, our time, and our passion towards this common cause. We host fundraisers and community events, match charitable contributions made by team members, and partner with local organizations aligned with our values to amplify our impact.
