County of Tuolumne Sonora Courthouse

Judicial Council of California

For more than a century, Tuolumne County's historic courthouse anchored Courthouse Square in downtown Sonora serving as a fixture of civic life that had simply outlived its ability to support modern court operations. Rather than patch aging infrastructure, the County took a longer view: a Master Plan for a Law & Justice Center that would bring judicial and correctional services together on a cohesive, purpose-built campus.

The New Sonora Courthouse is the centerpiece of that campus, where it is flanked by a new jail and juvenile hall, and integrated into the hilly terrain that defines the site. Five courtrooms, administrative offices, in-custody facilities, and family court services are organized within a building that steps with the landscape and opens to breathtaking views of the surrounding Sonora hills.

Designed under the principle of Access to Justice, the courthouse is as much a civic gathering space as a secure judicial facility. It is meant to feel approachable to the public it serves while evoking the spirit of the the historic Courthouse Square.
