Fresno City College New Science Building
State Center Community College District
Positioned prominently along a major thoroughfare, Fresno City College's new Science Building was designed to strengthen FCC's connection to the surrounding community while creating a cohesive new gateway to campus. An innovative "wings" concept organizes the facility by discipline with Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy each occupying purpose-built spaces with specialized laboratories and equipment. Flexible "sticky spaces" on every floor invite the spontaneous collaboration that formal classrooms can't always accommodate, while lecture halls and technology-rich classrooms bring cutting-edge pedagogy to the student body, many of whom are first generation college students.
The building goes beyond STEM instruction, creating a comprehensive student support hub with tutoring services, a computer lab, a Welcome Center, and faculty offices. A strategic partnership with Fresno Unified School District adds Design Science program (Middle College), building direct pathways from high school into higher education. Natural daylighting, high-performance HVAC and laboratory ventilation systems, and sustainable material selections reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship while creating a healthy learning environment.
The Fresno City College Science Building demonstrates how student-centered design removes barriers to success and creates an environment where every learner can thrive. By placing student needs at the heart of every design decision, this facility empowers learners to achieve their academic goals while building pathways toward meaningful careers in STEM.
