Harder Elementary School

Hayward Unified School District

"Made in Hayward" is more than a slogan for Hayward Unified School District, it's a commitment to the students and families who call this community home. At Harder Elementary School, where 76% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch, outdated facilities had quietly compounded the challenges of equitable education. The community had watched other district schools get replaced or renovated. They were ready for their turn.

The planning process met the community where it was, with town hall-style engagement with Spanish-language translators, grade-level educator workshops, and hands-on campus planning sessions that ensured the replacement reflected the culture and goals of the people it serves. Most Harder students speak Spanish at home; the design responds directly, with NextGEN expanded learning spaces built into interior circulation that provide small-group and one-on-one intervention for English Language Learners and students with specialized needs.

Four buildings organized around a central spine maximize sightlines across campus and take full advantage of the Bay Area climate with covered outdoor dining, an amphitheater-style outdoor classroom, and school gardens which activate the spaces between buildings for learning, gathering, and connection. The Learning Commons, with its high ceilings and glass walls, functions as a neighborhood beacon after hours, hosting the District's Parent University program, a community computer lab, a Homework Center for students, and after-school Youth Enrichment Programs.
A photovoltaic installation meets 100% of the campus's electricity needs, and the campus is HUSD's first CHPS Verified Elementary School.
