Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Hospital Courtyard Refresh

Kaiser Permanente

Healing doesn't just happen in exam rooms and hospital beds. The Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Courtyard Renovation was designed around the understanding that recovery is also served by having a place to step away from the clinical environment, breathe, and reconnect with something quieter.

The "Urban Retreat" concept draws its character directly from Vallejo's position between the waterfront and the city: a duality expressed through colors, patterns, and finishes that carry the vibrancy of an urban environment without sacrificing calm. Warm wood tones and neutral tiles ground the space in natural warmth, while the therapeutic sound of water runs underneath it all. Flexible seating accommodates the range of ways people use the space, including solo reflection, quiet conversation, a moment between appointments. The design integrates Kaiser Permanente's Total Health Environment philosophy and Standards program materials throughout, anchoring the retreat within the organization's broader commitment to whole-person care. The result is a space that serves members and staff equally and is a genuine respite at the center of a busy medical campus.
