Las Positas College Public Safety Center and Advanced Manufacturing and Transportation Facility
Chabot-Las Positas Community College District
The new Public Safety Center and Advanced Manufacturing and Transportation Facility at Las Positas College (LPC) was purpose-built to serve the region in training for Fire Technology, Emergency Medical Services, Administration of Justice, Auto Technology, Welding, and Advanced Manufacturing.
With a planning process that reflected the community the programs serve, many community voices and partners were involved in ensuring alignment between facilities and curriculum. LPC deans and instructors defined what they needed, while local fire departments shaped the training areas. The U.S. Department of Energy donated equipment that was integrated into the advanced technology spaces. GM maintains an active SMOG shop operated by students, and a newly envisioned EMS Simulation Lab lets students respond to emergencies in a controlled, technology-driven environment before they encounter them in the field.
The project site sits away from the core of the campus, allowing a larger footprint to accommodate the training needs of these vocational programs. The campus-edge site overlooks the Livermore Valley, and large open labs connect to covered outdoor learning areas, while a courtyard between the two buildings keeps students connected across programs. Students participating in these vocational programs typically spend hours on-site honing their craft. Gathering spaces, both indoor and outdoor, provide students with ample space to relax or study between classes. The facility is LEED Silver.
