Paso Verde K-8 School
Natomas Unified School District
Paso Verde K-8 School was built on land with a story: a historically agricultural site surrounded by habitat conservation areas, Giant Garter Snakes, Burrowing Owls, and Western Pond Turtles, and tucked within the airport's restricted land use boundary. Every design decision had to account for where it was, and what had been there before.
The campus design embraces that history. A "Central Spine" anchors the layout, its curve mirroring the arc of the American River that flows through Sacramento County. Agricultural inspiration shows up everywhere: in the green, brown, yellow, and orange color scheme; in exterior patterns and murals drawn from the natural forms of fruits and vegetables; in flooring that mimics tractor tire treads; and in grow gardens at the back of campus where students tend their own food and take genuine ownership of the land.
Six new buildings house four classroom wings, administration, kindergarten, library, and a multi-purpose gymnasium, all organized around the school's STEAM curriculum and the idea that project-based learning happens everywhere. NextGEN breakout spaces adjacent to each classroom wing offer mobile seating, flexible furnishings, and whiteboards for hands-on collaboration. Roll-up doors dissolve the boundary between inside and out, and wide, daylit corridors keep the campus open and connected.
