A waiting room sets the tone for everything that follows. The renovation of the Surgery Center Waiting Room and Reception area at UC Irvine Health's Gavin Herbert Eye Institute reoriented the space around two equally important experiences: the patient arriving for care, and the staff delivering it.
At the center of the redesign is a repositioned reception counter with counter-to-ceiling glass privacy elements, giving staff clear sightlines to both the entrance and the full waiting area without sacrificing the sense of openness the space needed. Updated floor and wall finishes throughout complete the patient-facing transformation, creating an environment that feels considered from the moment someone walks in. Behind the scenes, the project doubled the capacity of the staff lounge and added a convenient new staff restroom, significantly enhancing employee comfort and operational efficiency.
