Lionakis is excited to show the final images of our project that helped turn Kit Carson Middle School in Sacramento, into an International Baccalaureate High School! Many of the existing buildings were extensively renovated, re-purposed and updated, while other work included additions and brand new construction.

The conversion of this site to serve students in grades 7-12 included transforming the library into a new technology and media center with movable furnishings, as well as building an entirely new science and arts building. Energy efficient upgrades were completed throughout the site including accessibility updates. Moving the school administration area right to the front entrance area of the school provided an opportunity to create a wide open, bright and welcoming space.

A new blackbox theater building addition gives space and place for performances and gatherings and it is connected to an arts building where design decisions created an optimum space to create, paint, draw and sculpt. Dedicated science classrooms incorporate everything needed in a 21st Century learning environment and remote controlled, roll-up doors provide plenty of light and fresh air access on balmy weather days.

Because Lionakis always designs with sustainability in mind, there are numerous outdoor “rooms” that provide space for seating, gathering, group learning and they’re surrounded by a landscape that features drought tolerant native plants and low water use irrigation systems.
