Nearly 300,000 square feet of expansion space was recently approved by the CalSTRS board trustees in order to meet increasing growth, and the ongoing administration of the state teacher’s pension plan. Lionakis is teamed with ZGF Architects, DPR Construction, and Ridge Capital Inc. to design and deliver a Zero Net Energy (ZNE) sustainable building that will serve CalSTRS’ members for the next 50 years.

“As a Sacramento based firm with over 100 years designing buildings, Lionakis brings regional expertise, established relationships, and a focus on creating a workplace that will attract the very best financial professionals to maximize the teacher’s investments.”
Nicholas Docous, Architect, Lionakis

With construction projected for a mid-2021 completion and a budget of $300 million, there is still a lot more to come with this project. The expansion and construction strategies being developed will ensure that the building will feature 80% onsite renewable energy, while at the same time providing a model for urban core development that is unprecedented in the city of West Sacramento. The project will also provide opportunities for third-party lease revenue.

“The more investments we can manage in West Sacramento, the less we have to pay external Wall Street firms…and a new, expanded headquarters facility allows us to grow, attract and retain that talent.” Christopher J. AIlman, CIO, CalSTRS

The California State Teachers Retirement System is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world and serves nearly 1 million public school educators and their families throughout 1,700 school districts.
