Napa County Jail

Napa County’s commitment to a therapeutic approach that balances security needs with rehabilitation goals drove the design of this innovative 304-bed jail facility. The project aims to reduce recidivism through a progressive direct supervision model that fosters improved client interaction by stationing staff inside housing units rather than observing from control rooms.

The facility creates a normative, less institutional environment through thoughtful acoustics, abundant natural light, and soothing environmental graphics. This therapeutic design approach extends throughout the comprehensive functional areas, including a specialized 28-bed medical and mental health unit, 32-bed housing pods that reduce overcrowding and tension, medical clinic, intake and release areas, food and laundry services, central control, visitation spaces, and an adjacent administrative building.

Flexible, technology-rich multipurpose spaces accommodate various rehabilitation programs, educational activities, and treatment services, directly supporting the facility’s rehabilitative mission. The building demonstrates environmental responsibility by meeting LEED Silver standards, exceeding Title 24 Energy Performance requirements, and incorporating numerous sustainable features.
