Summer always seems to be a time when we start wondering about and exploring job options. Maybe it’s because you got passed up for a recent promotion, or your salary increase wasn’t what you were hoping for or perhaps just because you have more to offer and are looking for additional challenge. Or maybe you are seeing all the movement happening across your industry and you’re curious if it’s time to dust off the old resume and see what else is out there for you.

You might be asking yourself:

Should I quit my job?

Am I better off staying put?

Am I too old to change companies?

What if I never find a company that I truly love?

My job is fine; I’m just not happy, what do I do?

If any of these thoughts have been keeping you up at night (or distracting you during the day!) you are not alone.  A job change – at any level and at any age – can be overwhelming, stressful and time-consuming!  How do you know if you’re making the right decision? It’s not an easy process to pivot to something unfamiliar, or to quit a job that’s okay but ultimately professionally unsatisfying.

If you find yourself thinking more and more about what’s next for you, and you’re in a position to begin a job search, here are a couple of things you might want to consider:

  1. What is missing in the opportunity you have now? Is it growth potential? Maybe you just aren’t excited about becoming a part of the leadership team that you currently work for. Whatever it is, something is prompting you to question if you are still in the right place so take some time and figure out what it is.
  2. What would make you happy? Ask yourself: “If I could do anything, what would it be? Where would I spend my professional hours?” If that doesn’t line up with what you are currently doing or you don’t see a runway toward it for the future, maybe it is time to look around. The grass isn’t always greener – but sometimes it takes exploring to figure out that you are happy exactly right where you are (or not!).
