As San Francisco Unified School District’s first Zero Net Energy (ZNE) project, sustainable design strategies such as photovoltaic roof panels, natural ventilation and daylighting were employed in the recently completed K-8 expansion project.

The existing K-8 school project involved a significant expansion that included a permanent, two-story classroom building that replaced existing portables. This new addition also included an innovation lab and a gymnasium. Inside, the interior corridors provided opportunities for extended learning space and the stairwells promote student gathering. The interior design concept is a “Wave of Learning” where ocean colors and themes create wayfinding opportunities throughout the Marina neighborhood based school.
